Tree and Shrub Planting in Utah

Make Room for a Landscape That Grows With You

The right tree can change how a backyard feels. A thoughtfully placed shrub border can give a patio privacy while keeping the yard open and inviting.

At Jones Outdoors, we select and install trees and shrubs as part of a landscape built around your property. From our West Haven base, we help homeowners in Ogden and across Weber and Davis Counties choose planting that fits today and has room to grow.

The Right Plant Starts With the Right Place

Utah’s hot summers and cold winters narrow the choices, but climate is only part of the decision. A sheltered bed beside your home can have very different conditions from an exposed corner of the yard.

Our tree and shrub planting work starts with the space itself. We consider sunlight and shade before choosing plants. We also look at the soil and available water so the planting plan makes sense for your property.

Thoughtful Selection, Lasting Structure

Shade Where You’ll Enjoy It

A shade tree should be positioned for the area you want to use. We consider sun exposure alongside the tree’s eventual canopy, allowing for changes as it grows.

Privacy With Room to Grow

A planting screen needs enough space to fill in without becoming crowded. We help balance the privacy you want with the mature width of the plants and the views you’d like to keep.

Interest Through the Seasons

A planting plan should still have shape when flowers fade. We consider how trees and shrubs contribute to the yard at different times of year, including the quieter winter months.

A Comfortable Fit Around Your Patio

Planting can soften the edge of a patio and frame a seating area. Placement should also leave room to walk and keep branches clear of the spaces you use.

Planned for Northern Utah Soil and Water

Rocky ground and clay-heavy soil are familiar challenges along the Wasatch Front. Drainage matters as much as watering: a plant that tolerates summer heat may still struggle where its roots stay wet.

We match plant selection to the location and plan installation around the root ball and surrounding soil. Irrigation also needs to suit the planting. New roots need attention as they establish, and water requirements can change as plants grow.

If a planting bed sits above or below a retaining wall, its location should be considered with the wall’s drainage and structure. See our retaining wall services for that part of the project.

Our Process

Consultation

Tell us what you want your planting to accomplish. You might want shade over a seating area or more separation from a neighboring property. We’ll discuss your goals and budget before developing the plan.

Design

We select trees and shrubs for their role in the landscape and their suitability for the site. Mature size guides placement so the finished design accounts for more than the size of the nursery plant.

Implementation

Our team installs the selected planting and discusses the care it will need as it establishes. We coordinate planting with other planned work so the living elements fit the completed yard.

Tree & Shrub Planting Questions

When is the best time to plant trees and shrubs in Utah?

Spring and fall often offer milder conditions for planting. The best timing depends on the plant and your site, including whether the ground is workable and irrigation is available. We’ll discuss timing for your project rather than apply one planting date to every yard.

Start with the conditions where the tree will grow. Sun exposure and soil drainage matter alongside winter hardiness. We also consider the tree’s water needs and mature size before recommending a fit.

Think about how much screening you want in winter as well as summer. The available bed width affects your options. Spacing should account for mature growth, with room for access and appropriate clearance from property boundaries.

There’s no single spacing rule for every tree. The expected canopy and root growth should guide its distance from structures and paved areas. Overhead lines and buried utilities can also limit suitable locations. We plan around the selected tree rather than its size at installation.

Yes. Planning the planting alongside the rest of the yard helps coordinate growing space with the areas built for everyday use. We can include tree and shrub installation in a broader residential project.

Plants need to suit the amount of water the site can reliably provide. Trees and shrubs may need different watering from nearby lawn. We consider irrigation with soil drainage and discuss establishment needs after installation.
